A person well known for his knowledge and virtues came to Imam Hasan al-‘Askary (as) and asked, “Women are naturally weaker than men. Then why is it that they are given one share in inheritance? And men, despite their strength are given two shares? Justice demands that it should be on the contrary”. Imam Hasan al-‘Askary (as) lived a short life of 28 years. In this short life, he (as) had to endure great sufferings at the hands of the Abbasid tyrants. But inspite of all that suffering and confinement in Samarrah, ‘Iraq, many students benefited from his God gifted knowledge and later became scholars in their fields. IMAM HASAN BIN ‘ALI AL-‘ASKARY (A.S.)

 

Imam Hasan bin ‘Ali (as) was born in Madina on the 8th/10th of Rabi’ al-Aakhir 232 Hijrah (846 AD). He (as) died in Samarrah Iraq on 8th of Rabi ul-Awwal 260 Hijrah (874 AD), aged 28 years. The period of his Imamate was only 6 years.

Samarrah was a garrison town about 60 miles north of Baghdad. River Euphrates flows in the middle of the town, and because of the surrounding hills a cool breeze keeps the area cooler in comparison to Baghdad. The word 'Askar' in Arabic is used for army. Our 11th Imam's title became known as al-Askary, the one who lived all his life in a garrison town.Imam Hasan Al-Askary’ s (as) life from childhood to adulthood was spent in the house where his father Imam Ali al-Naqi (as) was to remain under house arrest. But despite this close guard on the Imam, he conducted his duties as Imam from inside the house. He taught people Quran and instructed his followers the true teachings of Islam as taught by the Prophet of Islam and his Ahlul bayt.

Al-‘Askar literally means ‘an army’. When Mu’tasimbillah, the Abbaside Caliph chose Surman Ray as the base for his army, the place later on became known as al-‘Askar. Imam Hasan bin ‘Ali bin Muhammad (a.s.) lived at this place and therefore became known as Hasan al-‘Askary (a.s.) meaning “Hasan, the resident of al-‘Askar”.

When he was born his father said that it was an order from the prophet s.a.w. that he should be named Hasan.  It was so well known that the last Imams father would be called Hasan that people had previously looked for the 12th Imam amongst the sons of Imam Hasan Al-Mujtaba (a.s.).

Birth

The eleventh bright star of Imamate appeared on the horizons of the sky of guardianship (willayat) in Madina and set in Samarra.

His name was Hassan and surname Abu Mohammad and the well-known titles were "Zaki" and "Askari". His father was Imam Hadi (A.S.), whereas his mother's name was Sausan.
