IMAM MUHAMMAD AL-BAQIR (A.S.)

One day, during his childhood, Imam al-Husayn ibn ‘Ali (a.s.) was sitting on the lap of his grandfather, the Messenger of Allah (saww), when Jabir bin ‘Abdullah al-Ansari came by. The Holy Prophet (saww) looked at Jabir and said, “O Jabir! A child will be born in the offspring of this son of mine (al-Husayn) who will be the most knowledgeable and wisest (person of his time). O Jabir! Allah will keep you alive until his time and you will see him. O Jabir! When you meet him, convey my salaams to him”.

Jabir listened to this attentively and thereafter, he always eagerly waited for the opportunity to meet the young man from the offspring of al-Husayn (a.s.). As long as he had his eyes-sight with him, Jabir searched for this young man wherever he went and finally, due to old-age, when he lost his sight, he began to call out loudly the name of the young man wherever he went. So much as that people said, “Jabir has become insane due to old-age”.

After a very long wait, the day finally arrived when Jabir met the one whom he had been searching for all his life. Imam ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.) once came to meet Jabir and brought along his son Muhammad (a.s.). Jabir was very old and had lost his eye-sight, so he could not see anything. Imam ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.) asked his son to kiss the forehead of Jabir. As he did this, Jabir recognized the young man. He embraced the young boy and said, “O Son of the Prophet!

Your grandfather-the Messenger of Allah (saww)-has conveyed his greetings to you”. The young boy replied, “O Jabir! May peace of Allah be upon him and upon you too”. Jabir then pleaded to the young man for his intercession for himself in the Hereafter to which he (a.s.) agreed and shortly thereafter, Jabir passed away from this world. (Chauda-Sitaare)

This young boy was none other than our fifth Imam, Imam Muhammad ibn ‘Ali al-Baqir (a.s.).

Birth:     1st Rajab 57 AH in Madina

SOME OF HIS SAYINGS:

“Transgressions are three: One which Allah forgives, one which He does not forgive, and one which He does not ignore. As for the transgression which He does not forgive, it is associating partners to Him; As for the transgression which He forgives is that which is between man and his God; But the transgression which He does not ignore is the one committed against the rights of men”. (Al-Kaafi)

“Verily enjoining what is good and forbidding what is evil is the path of the prophets and behaviour of good doers. It is such a great obligatory deed by which other obligatory deeds can survive, other creeds can be saved, transactions are made lawful, injustices are warded off and prosperity can fill the earth..”  (Al-Kaafi)

“Regard for kinship causes (five advantages):

  1. The purification (and acceptance) of deeds
  2. Increase in wealth
  3. Repelling misfortunes
  4. Easiness in reckoning (in the Hereafter)
  5. Prolonging of life”   (Al-Kaafi)

On the auspicious occasion of the birth of Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (a.s.), we humbly extend our greetings and felicitations to our 12th Living Imam, Imam Muhammad al-Mahdi (AJ) and to all the followers of Ahlul-Bayt (a.s.)
