SHURB AL-KHAMR (ALCOHOLIC DRINK) PART 2

“They ask you about intoxicants and the games of chance. Say: In both of them there is a great sin (Ithm) and means of profit for men, and their sin is greater than their profit”.       (2:219)

Ayatullah Abdul Hussein Dasti Ghayb (r.a) writes in “Gunahaane Kabeerah” thus:

It is explained in “Tafseer al-Meezaan” that (the two arabic words in Quran) ‘Dhamb’ and ‘Ithm’ are synonyms that denote a condition a condition wherein the person involved is deprived of reason. He has no inclination for deeds of virtue nor can he maintain an amiable disposition. ‘Ithm’ is a type of sin, the evil effects of which become apparent in the person and he is absolutely doomed.

WHY ALCOHOL IS FORBIDDEN?

The evils of Alcohol consumption are known to all. However, we outline some of the most important reasons below why Alcohol is forbidden in Islam.

Alcohol adversely effects health & life.

Research has shown that the health of an Alcoholic is affected in various ways. Alcohol effects the digestion, blood circulation, intestines, liver, respiratory organs and above all, the central nervous system. Ayatullah Dasti Ghayb has explained each of the above with references in “Gunahaane Kabeerah”.

Seyyid Mujtaba Musawwi Lari in his book “Western Civilization Through Muslim Eyes” states:

Doctors attending the 24th International Congress for the Combating of Alcoholism in France issued the following statement concerning the effects of Alcohol on mind & spirit: 20% of women and 60% of men entering hospital are alcohol addicts. 70% of mental patients and 40% of veneral patients were so afflicted as a consequence of misuse of Alcohol.

In England, experts affirm 95% of mental cases are due to mental disease induced by Alcoholic drinks. (Health Magazine). And the same magazine (No.12,p.5)states: French newspapers headline as ‘Shaking’ the report of the French Minister of Health on the number of deaths due to Alcohol, for it said in one year 20,000 deaths in France ere due to excessive Alcohol consumption, and cited the Secretary-General of the Committee for Combating Alcoholism as authority for the statistic that 25% of Industrial accidents and 57% of automobile accidents in France were due to Alcohol.

HAROON-THE ABBASIDE CALIPH

Haroon ar-Rasheed once came to visit a mental hospital in Baghdad. Whilst going round looking at the mentally retarded patients, he saw a young man walking around with much firmness of character and in dignified manner. The Caliph was informed that this young man was, for no sound reason, admitted in the hospital.

At that moment, to entertain the Caliph, wine was brought and placed before him. He drank a glass of it and calling that young man who was wrongly admitted as a mad patient, he offered him to drink a glass of wine.

The young man refused to drink. When the Caliph insisted, he said:

‘O Haroon –the Caliph ! by drinking wine, you turn mad like patients here. How will I become if I were to drink it?’

Hearing this taunting logic, Haroon laughed and issued an order to release the young man from the hospital.
