The Great Struggle of
Muslim Ibn Aqeel
By:
Ali Hussain Jalali, Chicago, USA
The Imam sent three people with Muslim: Qays Ibn Mash'ar al-Saydawi, 'Imarah
Ibn 'Abdullah al-Saluli and 'Abdul Rahman Ibn 'Abdullah al-Azdi. The
Imam said to Muslim, "Fear God, and check to see if whatever the people
of Kufah are saying in their letters is true. If that is the case, write
me a letter immediately about the situation."
Muslim left Mecca on the 15th of Ramadan traveling by way of Medinah. He
went to Masjid al-Nabi and prayed there. Then he bade farewell to his
relatives and asked two people to help lead the way for him to Kufah. On
the way, they were lost and decided to stop, but Muslim kept going. He
did not stop until he reached a place called Batn al-Khabt where he
found some water and stayed.

Muslim Ibn Aqil in Kufah
Imam al-Husayn chose Muslim ibn 'Aqil, son of his uncle and the husband
of his sister Ruqayyah, to take back the reply to the letters of the
people of Kufah.
Muslim ibn 'Aqil together with his companions set off for Kufah and
arrived there on the 5th Shawwal, 60 A.H. Muslim ibn 'Aqil stayed at the
house of Mukhtar ibn Abi 'Ubaydah Thaqafi, better known as the house of
Salim ibn Musayyib. In another account given by Tabari, he stayed at the

When thinking about
Karbala, many people think about the virtues of Imam Husayn (AS), the
bravery of Hazrat Abbas (AS), the courage of Hazrat Zainab (AS) and
others. We barely think about the important deeds of Hazrat Muslim
bin Aqeel (AS). We know that he was sent to Koofa, as an envoy for the
Imam (AS), but our knowledge after that is limited. We know about the
courage of his two sons, and we know the fact that he was the Imam’s
son, because Hazrat Aqeel (AS) and Imam Ali (AS) were brothers.
