Al-Maqdisi and the Miscarriage of al-Muhassan

Al-Maqdisi has said, “The grandsons of the Messenger of Allah (A.S.) are: `Abdullah ibn `Othman, Ali ibn Abul-`as, Umama daughter of Abul-`as, al-Hasan (A.S.), al-Husain (A.S.), Muhassan, Umm Kulthum and Zainab, eight all in all.”1

He also said, “He has twenty-eight children, eleven males and seven females. Among them from Fatima (A.S.) are five: al-Hasan (A.S.), al-Husain (A.S.), Muhassan, Umm Kulthum al-Kubra and Zainab al-Kubra..., etc.”2

He has also been already quoted as having said, “... As for Muhassan son of Ali (A.S.), he perished young.”3

57. He has also said, “She gave birth to Muhassan; he is the one the Shi`as claim was miscarried because `Omer hit her. Many historians are not familiar with Muhassan.”4

It appears from his statements that:

1) Shi`as, generally speaking, say that `Omer hit Fatima (A.S.), so she miscarried Muhassan.

2) He himself counts Muhassan as one of the grandsons of the Prophet (A.S.) and one of the sons of Fatima (A.S.) saying that he died young as his statements above indicate.

3. His statement that many historians are not familiar with Muhassan, as we indicated, is not quite accurate because these historians pay attention to those who lived rather than to whoever died by a miscarriage.
