THE ARBA’EEN: 40TH OF IMAM AL-HUSAYN (A.S)

It is customary among Muslims to pay tribute to their deceased person forty days after his death. This is because the Holy prophet (saww) has said; “The earth mourns the death of a believer for forty mornings”. (Bihar al-Anwaar)

Imam Ja’ffar al-Sadiq (a.s) has said, “The sky wept over al-Husayn (a.s) for forty mornings with blood, while the earth wept over him for forty mornings with blackness. The sun wept over him for forty mornings with an eclipse and with redness, whereas the angels wept over him for forty mornings. No woman among us ever dyed with henna, nor used any oil, nor any kohl nor cohabited with her husband till the head of Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad was brought to us, and we are still grieving even after all that”. (Mustadrak al-Wasail)

THE UPRISING OF IMAM AL-HUSAYN (A.S.)

Islam clearly stipulates that the leader of the Islamic nation must abide by the principles of justice and equity. He should hold the laws of Islamic Sharia’h and the will of the Islamic Ummah in highest esteem and at no cost, should he compromise them. A leader must refrain from ruling oppressively and misappropriating his power as a way to gain wealth, luxury and a monopoly of property and privileges. Leadership ought not to be given to anyone who lacks the ability of being an exemplary leader in his deeds, morals and understanding of the important divine laws. In addition, he should also be politically efficient.

"And think not of those who are slain in Allah's way as dead, they are alive, (and) by their Lord well provided.”  (3:169)

A host of political, social and religious factors made Imam Husayn (a.s) rise to challenge Yazeed bin Mu’awiya. Key factor was the violation of the principles upon which Islamic rule is based. Imam Husayn (a.s) had the following goals in mind when he started his uprising:

AZADARI & THE AHLUL-BAYT (A.S.)

The Ma'soom Imams (as) held Azadari or mourning programs on the day of Aashura, and in fact the Imams of the Ahlul-Bayt (as) encouraged others to continue to hold such programs to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Husayn (as) in various forms and styles of remembrance be it those which are obligatory, or those that are Mustahab or permissible, for this day is like no other day.

QURAN – A PRIDE OF AHLUL-BAYT (AS)

It is reported from Imam Ali ibn al-Husayn (as):

“On the eve of ‘Aashura (10th night of Muharram 61 AH) I heard my beloved father (Imam Husayn) saying to his companions:

‘I praise Allah (SWT) in the best possible manner. In difficulties and during ease, I extend my gratitude to Him. O my Lord! My (sincere) thanks to You for honouring us -the Ahlul-Bayt through Prophethood (of Muhammad) & for bestowing the knowledge of Quran (to us)’”. (Quran-o-‘Itrat)

THE HOLY QURAN – PART 24

IMAM HUSAYN BIN ALI (A.S.) & THE HOLY QURAN (SECTION 2)

Abbas bin Ali (as) was the brother of Imam Husayn (as). It is related that when they were in Karbala, Abbas (as) came to Imam (as) and said, “The army of Yazeed has arrived and they claim that they have received the command of their Ameer that we should choose one of the two options: either we swear oath of allegiance to Yazeed or prepare for the battle”.

Imam Husayn (as) told his brother thus: “Go and tell them to delay the battle until tomorrow. I want an opportunity of one night wherein we can pray, supplicate and ask for forgiveness from our Lord. These people are aware that I love praying, reciting the Book of Allah and supplicate extensively”. (Quran-o-‘Itrat)

IMAM HUSAYN BIN ALI (A.S.) & THE HOLY QURAN (SECTION 1)

HIS STRONG ATTACHMENT WITH QURAN

The attachment of Imam Husayn (as) with the Holy Quran was very strong. Infact, this is evident from his Ziyaaraat (salutations) that we recite on different occasions.

For instance, in the Ziyaarah of Laylatul-Qadr, we recite:

“I bear witness that you established prayers, and gave Zakat, enjoined the good and forbade evil. You recited the Book (Quran) the way it should be recited…”

IMAM AL-HUSSEIN (A.S) & THE HOLY QURAN

Abu Abdil Rahman Salmi was a tutor of the Holy Quran in Madina. Many children would come to him to learn how to recite the Holy book.

One day he taught a son of Imam al-Hussein (a.s) to recite Suratul-Fatihah (al-Hamd). When the child recited the surah before his father, the Imam (a.s) was so pleased that he rewarded the tutor with valuable gifts.

Some people criticised this action saying it was not necessary to give so much in return for teaching one surah. In reply, the Imam (a.s) said, “What comparison can there be between the gift I have given to the tutor of my child, and his teaching the Holy Quran, the gift which he has given to my child?”

IMAM AL-HUSSEIN (A.S)’S SEVERED HEAD: An excerpt from “Karbala & Beyond”.

Yazeed ordered al-Hussein’s head to be brought to him. He put it in a gold washbowl. The women were behind him. Sukayna and Fatima stood and tried anxiously to steal a look at it as Yazeed kept hiding it from them. When they did see it, they burst in tears. He then permitted people to enter to see him. Yazeed took a rod and kept hitting al-Hussein’s lips with it saying: “A day for a day: this day is (in revenge) for Badr”.  The he cited these verses by al-Haseen ibn al-Hamam:

“To be fair to us our folks never did dare,

 so swords dripping with blood were to them fair;

A GIFT FROM IMAM AL-HUSSEIN (A.S)

On the 10th day of Muharram, known as the day of ‘Aashura, in the year 61 A.H. when Imam Abu ‘Abdillahil Hussein (as) came into the tent to bid farewell to his family members, he held the hand of his sick son, Ali ibn al-Hussein (as) and pressed it against his chest. He (as) then said,

“O son ! I am teaching you a dua’ which you should remember. It was taught by angel Jibrail to my grandfather the messenger of Allah who passed it to my mother Fatima. Whenever you have a special need or are faced with any calamity or crises, or are inflicted with any grief or hardship, then recite the following supplication”:

SERMON OF ABU ABDILLAHIL HUSSAYN (A.S.) ON ASHURAH

On the day of Ashurah, when Imam Hussayn (as) saw the gathering of the enemies against him which was like a torrent, he raised both his hands towards the sky and prayed, O’ my Lord ! You are my haven in every mishap, my hope in every predicament, my refuge and defender in every ordeal. How many a distress that weakens the heart, makes the enemy rejoice at the misfortune. When I entrusted it to You out of preference over others, You did not let me down and had driven away and eliminated all these distressing things. You are the Giver of every boon and the ultimate source of every wish to be granted.

Once Prophet Issa (as) was passing by Karbala when he sat down and began to weep. His disciples (hawariyyoon) who were observing him, followed suit and began weeping too. But not understanding the reason for this behaviour, they asked him:

O’ Spirit of God ! What is that which makes you weep?

Issa (as) said:

Do you know what land this is?

History of the Shrine of Imam Husayn (A.S.)

Unlike any other city, Karbala has its named engraved in the memory of generations, and in the expanse of the Muslim world...
Believers remember that name with sorrow and distress, for they remember the history of the master of all martyrs, Imam Husayn, peace be upon him, and his sacrifice for Islam.
The wave of visitors never stopped coming to Karbala, from the time the Umayyad and Abbaside caliphs prevented the construction of the shrines to the time the believers were able to build the precinct, despite the hardships and difficulties imposed on them.
