Matam
By Aneela
Sultan
Matam is a
physical action, which does not have only one cause.
Matam can be observed when there is an objection against the zulm
(injustice) of innocent souls. (Owais Qarni knocked out all his teeth on
hearing that the Prophet (pbuh) had lost his tooth in the battle of Uhud)
It can be observed when an individual objects to an action, which he/she
has committed against their own soul. (An incident has been narrated in
the Muwatta of Imam Malik in regards to a man who started beating his
breast due to having relations with his spouse one day, within the Holy
month of Ramadhan)

Mourning
Every year, in the months of Muharram and Safar, we mourn Karbala.
We mourn the tragedy which befell the household of Prophet Muhammad
(saw) in the year 61 AH in Karbala, Iraq. Muslims and particularly
the followers of Ahlul-Bayt (as) wear black clothes (as a sign of
grief), hold Majalis (gatherings) where the tragic event of Karbala
is narrated, Marathiya and Nauhas (Eulogies and Elegies) are recited
and people weep.

The Message of Devotion
"O People! The Messenger of Allah has said: If anyone witnesses an
oppressive ruler who permits that which has been forbidden by Allah,
breaks the divine covenant, opposes the Prophet's Sunnah and
regulations, and treats Allah’s servants through sinful acts and
oppression, but does not express his opposition by actions or words
towards that ruler, then Allah would have the right to place him in the
status of the oppressive ruler (the hellfire). (1)

Highlights of
Karbala
Think not
of those who are slain in God's way as dead. Nay, they live,
finding their sustenance in the presence of their Lord.
Holy Quran (3:169)
The events of Karbala reflect the collision of the good
versus the evil, the virtuous versus the wicked, and the
collision of Imam Hussain (the head of virtue) versus Yazid
(the head of impiety). Imam Hussain (pbuh) was a
revolutionary person, a righteous man, the religious
authority, the Imam of Muslim Ummah (nation). As the
representative of his grandfather Prophet Muhammad (pbuh),
Imam Hussain's main concern was to safeguard and protect
Islam and guide fellow Muslims. On the other hand, the
staying power of the rulers (Muawiya and his son Yazid)
depended solely on the might of the sword. They used brute
force to rule over the Muslim empire even by all possible
illicit means.

The
Martyrs of Karbala
Ganj-e-Shuhada is
the place in Karbala where the majority of the martyrs are buried.
After martyrdom, the bodies of the martyrs lay on the desert of
Karbala without Kafn. It was at the time of chehlum - the 40th day of
the martyrdom - that Imam Zain-ul-Abideen(a.s.) returned to Karbala to
pay homage to the martyrs and he, alongwith the people of the tribe of
bani-Asad, buried the bodies of the martyrs of Karbala.
Here is a complete list of the martyrs of Karbala. Also included are
the people who were martyred for the same cause before the incident of
Karbala.

the 2nd night of Moharram.
On the 2nd

Yazid's soldiers were already there, having arrived long before the

The small
tribe living in Karbala gathered around Hussain(a.s)'s caravan. Imam
Hussain(a.s) enquired about the price of the land in Karbala. He then
bought the entire land.
Then, he
first spoke to the menfolk of the tribe.

come out and join the army to fight against Hussain. Anyone not
doing so would be killed. Whoever brings the head of Hussain will

on Muharram and its significance.
In the month of Rajab of
the 60th year of Hijra, Mu’awiyya died. Yazeed became the
Khaleefa of the
Muslim
Kingdom. People of Makkah and Madinah who had been
approving the Khilafat for the last fifty years, accepted Yazeed’s
accession to the throne without a word of protest.
To-day was the day of Eed-Qurban, the day following the Hajj. We would
like to bring to you the historical background to the ritual of Hajj
that every Muslim has to perform at least once in his/her life time.
We will then see the
connection of these stories with
Karbala, insha Allah.

refused, they should be beheaded and their severed heads were to be
sent to Yazeed. Abdullah bin Zubayr escaped to Makkah in the darkness
of the night before he could be accosted for the Ba’yat.

We have just gone through the new year’s
celebrations for the year 2006. Soon we will be entering the Islamic
new year of 1427 come the month of Muharram. Some young Muslims born
and raised in the west generally and those living in the USA
specifically ask: Why don’t we celebrate the beginning of the Islamic
year? One group of Muslims actually get together during
the first ten days of Muharram and commemorate the great sacrifice
given at Karbala in the 61st year of Hijra (some 1,366
years ago). Those gatherings are somber in nature and consist of
serious lectures on history, religious ideology and the recital of
dirges and lamentations and other devotional poetry.
