A Non
Muslim Woman Experiments with Hijab
by Kathy Chin
I walked down the street in my long white dress and inch-long, black
hair one afternoon, and truck drivers whistled and shouted obscenities
at me.
I felt defeated. I had just stepped out of a hair salon. I had cut my
hair short, telling the hairdresser to trim it as she would a guy's.

THE QUESTION OF HIJAB AND CHOICE
By Sound Vision Staff Writer
The discussion at the Islam Awareness
Week exhibition started out nicely enough. We talked about women's
rights, domestic violence, sexual abuse, heavy, heavy issues. It was
interesting, she was a feminist, and I, a Muslim woman. But we
connected.
Then, as always, the topic turned to Hijab. She started out politely
enough, complimenting me on mine and the way I wore it. She asked why I
wore it. Faith and personal choice, I replied, the words practically a
mantra now after speaking to several women about it in the past. But I
began to feel that familiar knot in my stomach. I knew what the next
question would be.

10 TIPS FOR MUSLIM ACTIVISTS TO DEAL WITH
HIJAB
By Sound Vision Staff Writer
While Hijab is an obligation clearly
ordained in the Quran and Sunnah, it is only one of many Islamic
obligations.
Yet, some Muslim organizations have heated debates about it, and
sometimes practice unacceptable behavior towards those Muslim women who
do not wear Hijab, to the point of excluding them or making them feel
uncomfortable.
How can Muslim activists make their organizations and communities places
where the laws of Islam are upheld, but Muslims, men and women, are not
excluded? Where Hijab does not become a flash point? Below are some
tips.

You Don't Have to Wear That in Canada
The Hijab Experience of Canadian Muslim Women
by Katherine Bullock
The furor over the expulsion in 1995 of Quebec high school students who
refused to remove their head scarves, with some people declaring the
Hijab might not be considered proper “Canadian” dress, demonstrates that
the West has not yet transcended the negative stereotype of the
oppressed, veiled Muslim woman which has generated during the period of
Western colonization of the Middle East.

Discrimination is
an action, treatment or outlook that is formed without just grounds or
insufficient knowledge. Since the Hijab (headgear) is both a manifest
sign of Islam and adherence to Islam, Muslim women are often vulnerable
of being unjustly discriminated against.
It happened to me
on Monday, August 18th 2003 after having decided to apply for
a cut-out job advertisement that said it required sales assistants,
cashiers and packers in Carrefour Hypermarket. It was a great
opportunity for me as I have been desperately searching for a job. I
mentally prepared myself for the walk-in-interview all the while making
sure my resume was with me.

and The Reality

THE VEIL ?
Finally, let us
shed some light on what is considered in the West as the
greatest symbol
of women's oppression and servitude, the veil or the
head cover. Is
it true that there is no such thing as the veil in the
Judaeo-Christian tradition? Let us set the record straight. According
to
Rabbi Dr.
Menachem M. Brayer (Professor of Biblical Literature at
Yeshiva
University) in his book, The Jewish woman in Rabbinic

Women In Islam
The Prophet said
that women totally dominate men of intellect and Possessors of Hearts,
But ignorant men dominate women, for they are shackled by the ferocity
of animals. They have no kindness, gentleness, or love, since animality
dominates their nature. Love and kindness are human attributes, anger
and sensuality belong to the animals.

The Virtues of
Hijab
1.An act of obedience.
The hijab is an act
of obedience to Allah and to his prophet (pbuh), Allah says in the
Qur'an: `It is not for a believer, man or woman, when Allah and His
messenger have decreed a matter that they should have an option in their
decision. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger, has indeed
strayed in a plain error.' (S33:36).

Hijab (Veil)
Islam recorded a great turning point in
the history of women which has no rival to this day. Through it, she
regained her honor and rights of which she had been deprived for
centuries under the burdens of unjust views of the pre-Islamic era of
Ignorance (Jahiliyah). Islam restored her full rights to lead a noble
life under the shadow of a glorious civilized system.
For the first time in history, woman was able to enjoy her lofty human
rights, according to

Wife Beating Fatawas!
Although, in some cases
beating has been sanctioned as a last resort, nevertheless, strict
conditions have been set. Of those conditions is that the beating has to
be light, so much so, that it should be hit by a light thing like a pack
of grass or a very small and thin stick of wood (miswak) lightly
and slowly that it does not hurt a bit just to show that the man
is not satisfied with certain actions and no evidence of redness or
blackness is to be visible on the skin. And criteria is not that the
redness/blackness remains for a duration of time but as soon as the
markings are apparently clear then the person responsible for this is
required to pay Blood money.

They hate women!? Don't
they?!
Muslim women
have become an absolute symbol of oppression, and distorted images of
them permeate news coverage. Journalists from across the political
spectrum maintained that it was Islam that oppressed women. Beware
Muslims, they screamed in their unlikely unanimity. They hate women,
don't they? As soon as they turn their attentions to Islam, commentators
become missionaries. Muslim women must be saved from a religion that
reviles, objectifies and veils them.

The Holy Quran has ordered the women to
cover themselves in some situations.
"And say to the believing women that
they cast down their looks and guard their private parts and do not
display their ornaments except what appear thereof. And let them wear
their head coverings over their bosoms, and not display their
ornaments..." (Surah Nur

I probably do not fit into the
preconceived notion of a "rebel." I have no visible tattoos and minimal
piercings. I do not possess a leather jacket. In fact, when most people
look at me, their first thought usually is something along the lines of
"oppressed female."

Equal status and worth of the sexes
The first of these characteristics of a
Qur'anic society which affect women is that both sexes are held to be
equal in status and worth. In other words, the Qur'an teaches us that
women and men are all creatures of Allah, existing on a level of equal
worth and value, although their equal importance does not substantiate a
claim for their equivalence or perfect identity. This equality of male
and female is documentable in the Qur'an in passages pertaining to at
least four aspects of human existence and interaction.
