THE HOLY QURAN – PART 28

IMAM AL-SAJJAD (A.S.) & THE HOLY QURAN-(SECTION 3)

The following are some of the quotations from the sermons and sayings of Imam al-Sajjad (as) in which he (as) has given references to the Holy Quran:

“Beware, O people, of sins and acts of disobedience (to Allah) against which Allah has warned and exhorted in the truthful Book and the articulate rhetoric. When Shaytan urges you to enjoy the transitory passions and pleasures of this world, do not feel secured (in succumbing to him) from the retribution and punishment of Allah. Allah says: ‘When those who are Godwary are touched by insinuation of Satan, they remember (Allah) and, behold, they perceive’. (7:201) Take God-fearing as the slogan of your hearts and always remember that Allah promised you of the good rewarding and warned you against the painful anguish when you will be returned to Him. He, who fears something will certainly beware of it, and he who is beware of something will desert it…” (Tuhaf al-‘Uqool)

PRACTICING THE QURAN

One day a close relative of Imam al-Sajjad (as) abused him in public. He spoke bad words to him and then left but the Imam (as) did not utter any word against him.

As soon as the man left, Imam (as) turned towards the people who were present there and had witnessed what had just transpired, and said, “Whatever this man said to me, you all heard it. I would now want you to accompany me to him so that you hear what I have to tell him”.

THE HOLY QURAN – PART 26

IMAM AL-SAJJAD (A.S.) & THE HOLY QURAN-(SECTION 1)

IMPORTANCE OF HOLY QURAN

Imam Ali ibn al-Husayn al-Sajjad (as) held the Holy Quran dearly to his heart. This is evident from his sayings and behaviour with regard to the Quran. For instance, Zuhri has reported having heard Imam al-Sajjad (as) saying:

“If the inhabitants of the East and the West all perish and I am left alone with only the Glorious Quran, I will not become victim of any desolation”. (Al-Kaafi)

What the Imam (as) implied was that even if the entire earth became empty and he (as) was left alone therein, he (as) would neither feel sad nor lonely for as long as he (as) had the Holy Quran with him. Quran contains the words of Allah (SWT) and whoever recites it shall feel as though Allah (SWT) is with him and conversing to him. Therefore, even if such a person is left alone at any place and in any situation – he will certainly not feel lonely.

One day Imam Zaynul-‘Aabideen (as) asked his companion Abu Hamza Thumali, “Which place is the best?”

Abu Hamza was perplexed. Not knowing what to answer, he said, “Allah and His messenger know best”.

Thereupon, the Imam (as) answered,

“The best place is that, which is between the corner of the Ka’bah and the standing place of Ibrahim. (i.e. Hajar-e-Aswad & Maqaam-e-Ibrahim). Noah lived among his people for 950 years.

The Time of Imam Zayn al-Abidin (A.S.)

I (the author) think that there was no Islamic period like that when Ima`m Zayn al-'Abidin, peace be on him, lived. This period was full of political, social, and economic disorders. In it all the members of the society led a life of worries and grieves. They lost hope in a noble life. This is because the Umayyads spread wrongdoing and persecution and forced the people to follow what they hated.

The Fourth Imam

Imam Sajjad (Ali ibn Husayn entitled Zayn al-'abidin and Sajjad) was the son of the third Imam and his wife, the queen among women, the daughter of Yazdigird the king of Iran. He was the only son of Imam Husayn to survive, for his other three brothers Ali Akbar, aged twenty-five, five year old Ja'far and Ali Asghar (or 'Abdallah) who was a suckling baby were martyred during the event of Karbala. The Imam had also accompanied his father on the journey that terminated fatally in Karbala, but because of severe illness and the inability to carry arms or participate in fighting he was prevented from taking part in the holy war and being martyred. So he was sent with the womenfolk to Damascus. After spending a period in imprisonment he was sent with honor to Medina because Yazid wanted to conciliate public opinion. But for a second time, by the order of the Umayyad caliph, 'Abd al-Malik, he was chained and sent from Medina to Damascus and then again returned to Medina.

Martyrdom of Imam Zayn al-Abidin(A.S.)

Ima`m Zayn al-'Abidin, peace be on him, became old and weak. This is because he exhausted himself by hard worship and obedience to Allah. The historians unanimously agreed that the Ima`m passed most his lifetime fasting by day and standing in prayer by night. Meanwhile, he remembered the tragedy of Karbala`'. When he looked at his aunts and his sisters, he remembered their escape from one tent to another, and the caller of the people called out: "Burn the houses of the wrongdoers!" These memories saddened him very much and affected his body.

Martyrdom of Imam Zaynul Abideen (AS)

The father gently touched  the fevered forehead of his son. He was Hussein Ibn Ali (PBUH) who was sitting on the bed of his son Ali Ibn al-Hussein and had pinned hope in his luminous eyes. Imam Sajjad (PBUH) opened his eyes after feeling his father’s caress. The father’s kind face always boosted his morale. But this time it was different. The day after, the father was about to set off for an unequal battle, but the son was unable to join and help his father, since he had fallen sick. Imam Hussein (PBUH) looked at his son kindly and whispered the following sentences:
